Take a 10-minute barefoot walk and FEEL what happens to your pain, stress and sleep

Family camping is my favorite time of year!

I mean I get to annoy my sibling and spend all my time surrounded by fresh air, leafy trees, crisp water, and starry nights. Of course, roasting S’mores and Banana Boats over a warm fire is also a mighty delicious perk.

Don’t get me wrong, I love living in a city. But, it definitely limits my access to nature.

A new method of healing exclaims that daily interactions with the Earth are highly beneficial to our health. In more ways than one. Earthing, has been proven to reduce inflammation, balance electrons and help you sleep more soundly.

No, I’m not crazy.

It’s a real thing. and, (more importantly)…it works.

The Theory:

The practice of Earthing is based on the belief that our bodies are meant to physically come into contact with the Earth. We are meant to feel soil between our toes and grass between our fingers.

Why?

Because it works naturally as a negative grounding charge. Positive electrons build up in our bodies and direct contact with the ground, dirt, or grass, balances it out.

“Our bodies and cells have electrical energy, and with the commonality of Electromagnetic waves (through Wi-Fi and mobile phone,) many of us have a high amount of positive electrons built up in our bodies.”

Research has revealed that electrically conductive contact of the human body with the surface of the Earth produces interesting effects on physiology and health. Such effects relate to inflammation, immune responses, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.

Modern lifestyle:

Indoor living is becoming more and more common. Especially with the popularity of condos (and apartments) in popular hubs like New York City.

For generations contact with the Earth was a daily occurrence. People would balance their electrons through activities like; playing outside, lawn mowing, gardening, swimming in a nearby creek, etc.  The Earth couldn’t be avoided. It was a fact of life.

Nowadays, the situation is completely reversed. Kids spend their time “gaming” indoors, parties happen indoors, and we even hire people to do our outdoor chores.

Ok, what does that mean?

Basically, it means that are electron levels are imbalanced because we are carrying around too many positively charged ions. This can hurt our bodily, and nutritional health.

If you’ve ever spent a week away from home squishing sand in between your toes, or swimming in the ocean, you might have noticed you sleep more soundly. The sand and ocean water are both naturally conductive materials and help ground your body. They aid in the removal of numerous positive electrons.

What it does:

Think about it this way. You can’t use numerous plug-ins on that one electrical outlet in your house.

You know, the one in your kitchen that your coffee maker and microwave are plugged into. You’ll trip the breaker, and everything will short circuit. I only know the fancy, technical terms because my dad is in the electrical trade. I may have been yelled at once, or twice for doing this exact thing. In regular people terms, it means you’ve overloaded the outlet and now nothing attached to the outlet will work. Until you reset it, that is.

The human body works in the exact same way. We cannot overload one kind of electron because other facets of our body won’t work as efficiently. When in direct contact with the Earth, our bodies are filled with negatively charged electrons and match the electric energy level of the Earth.

Through grounding our bodies are more capable of doing many things. A study published by the US National Library of Medicine believes grounding to have an effect on the following;

Inflammation: Grounding produces measurable differences in the concentrations of white blood cells, cytokines, and other molecules involved in the inflammatory response. There are several hypotheses to explain observed effects, based on current research results and our understanding of the of cell and tissue make-up, cell biology, biophysics, and biochemistry.

“Grounding reduces pain and alters the numbers of circulating neutrophils and lymphocytes, and also affects various circulating chemical factors related to inflammation.”

Sleep: One study examined the effects of grounding on sleep and daily cortisol levels. The study involved 12 subjects who had issues sleeping and experienced pain. They slept grounded for 8 weeks. During this period, their daytime cortisol levels normalized. Most of the subjects stated that their sleep improved and their pain and stress levels declined.

  • Other Benefits of Earthing:
    • Reducing inflammation by defusing excess positive electrons.
    • Reducing chronic pain.
    • Improving Sleep.
    • Increasing Energy.
    • Lowering stress and promoting calmness by reducing stress hormones.
    • Normalizing biological rhythms including circadian rhythm.
    • Improving blood pressure and blood flow.
    • Relieving muscle tension and headache.
    • Lessens menstrual and female hormone symptoms.
    • Speeds healing- used in some places to prevent bed sores.
    • Can eliminate jet lag.
    • Protecting the body from EMFs.
    • Shortens recovery time from injury or athletic activity.
    • Reducing or eliminating snoring.
    • Help support adrenal health.

How to try Earthing:

Walking barefoot outside is the easiest option. For it to work, you must be barefoot and in contact with rock, dirt or water. The beach/ocean is possibly the best place because the sand and salt water are extremely conductive. However, if you don’t have a yard, or garden and you feel gross walking barefoot down a public street, walkway or field, you might consider an Earthing mat.

The Earthing mat allows you to do “earthing” while inside a building. It plugs into a normal 3 prong outlet. The Earths natural electrons flow right up through the ground wire and onto the mat, even if you’re in a high rise. An Earthing sheet works in the same way and can be used under your arms or at your feet while on a computer. Both are easy to bring when traveling.
