A salve is a wax or oil based ointment which is generally used topically to treat wounds, infections or just improve skin condition. There are many different types of salves which are used for different reasons, some are made to moisten dry skin, others are mean to relieve irritation, and some are meant to speed up the healing process of cuts and bruises.
Here I am presenting you with the recipe for a salve that will not only sooth irritated skin but will also help treat any cuts or wounds that you may sustain. But before I show you how to make this salve, first I’ll tell you about all of the beneficial ingredients that are used to make it.
Calendula is a plant that’s flower is often used to make medicine. Calendula is often applied to the skin reduce pain and swelling and is also used to treat poorly healing wounds and leg ulcers.
Some research shows that applying a calendula ointment to the skin can reduce dermatitis caused by radiation.
Researchers have found that wounds treated with coconut oil heal significantly faster than those not treated at all.
A study was conducted on the effect of virgin coconut oil on excision wounds in rats. 18 rats were split up into 3 groups (6 rats to each group) to evaluate the effectiveness of virgin coconut oil on their wounds. The first group was not treated with anything, the second group was treated with 0.5 ml of coconut oil and the third group was treated with 1 ml of coconut oil.
Researchers found that the wounds of the groups treated with coconut oil healed much faster than the group that went untreated.
In combination with other ingredients beeswax has been found to be able to treat many conditions which cause inflammation of the skin.
During a partially controlled, single blinded study, 11 patients with dermatitis and 10 patients with psoriasis were treated with a mixture containing a combination of honey, beeswax and olive oil.
Researchers found that body lesions in both types of patients had lessened in severity after having applied the beeswax mixture. These results show that beeswax is effective at reducing the symptoms of skin conditions cause by inflammation.
Three quarters of a cup of calendula oil
One quarter of a cup of olive oil
One ounce of beeswax
Fifteen drops of lavender oil
Pinch of turmeric (optional, for color and boosting healing ability)
Long wooden spoon
1. Take a double boiler, add water to bottom pot. Pour calendula into top pot.
2. Place on low heat and grate beeswax into calendula oil, then add in coconut oil. Once mixture has melted, add lavender essential oil.
3.Turn off heat and stir.
4. Pour mixture into metal tin containers to let cool and store.
