Jasmine plants are beautiful but their beauty isn’t the topic here. It’s why they are especially good for stress relief. The word “jasmine” — from Persian Yasmin — means ‘a gift from God.’ Nicknamed “Queen of the Night”, this plant reveals its greatest bloom, beauty, and scent.
It has quite a strong aroma produced by the flowers. Eighty-three percent of all women’s fragrances have a jasmine scent, while one-third of men’s fragrances have it. It’s not a popularity contest but this does show you just how nice and relaxing the scent is. For years, Jasmine has been used in Asia as a natural remedy for depression, anxiety, and even insomnia.
How does Jasmine work wonders for mental health?
A recent study showed that mice that were exposed to the aroma of Jasmine plants as well as Jasmine essential oil calmed down significantly and sat quietly in the corner. They ceased to behave in an agitated manner. Scientists dug further to figure out the reason for this. They carried out brain scans on the mice and discovered that the Jasmine fragrance augmented the effect of a chemical – GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid).
GABA produces a calming effect on your brain because it blocks certain brain signals and decreases activity in your nervous system. The augmenting of GABA by Jasmine is what gives it the ability to relieve stress and anxiety.
According to Professor Hanns Hatt from the Ruhr University in Bochum Germany, the research, “We have discovered a new class of GABA receptor modulator which can be administered parentally and through the respiratory air. Applications in sedation, anxiety, excitement, and aggression relieving treatment and sleep induction therapy are all imaginable,” he further explained. 
They also found that the effects of Jasmine are higher than that of sleeping pills, anti-anxiety meds, and sedatives because it potentiates the effects of GABA more than five times.
This was proven by research published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry by Professor Hatt the study which is regarded as “evidence of a scientific basis for aromatherapy’ was done by testing the effect of jasmine fragrance and its chemical substitutes on mice. Brain scans of the mice showed that the effect of GABA on nerve cells was greatly enhanced by the scent.
Jasmine essential oil
Jasmine essential oil is an essential oil obtained from the white flowers of the common jasmine plant. This oil is a bit on the pricey side (about $55 for a 5ml bottle) because the extraction process is sophisticated.
The flowers are delicately handpicked and immediately processed so as not to lose their essence. One ml of the oil requires over 8,000 flowers for its production which is the reason it’s often used in expensive perfumes.
Solvent extraction — a method for separating compounds based on their relative solubilities in two immiscible liquids — is used as opposed to steam distillation. This is because the latter which involves high heat could cause the petals to deteriorate.
Truly, Jasmine is a seductive and heady scent, however, it has numerous other benefits.
Benefits of Jasmine essential oil
It is a mood stabilizer
This is done by acting on the nervous system. It has been shown to lift emotions that cause anxiety and nervous tension.
A 2010 study revealed that the use of this essential oil in aromatherapy massage leads to relief of depression and raised moods in humans. It also showed that jasmine stimulates beta brain waves that are responsible for alertness and thinking.
A test report on the subject stated that “exposure to jasmine oil increased positive emotions including feelings of well-being, active, fresh and romantic. Negative emotions such as feeling drowsy were significantly reduced.”
It balances hormones
Jasmine oil is good for the reproductive system. It does not only offer relief from severe menstrual cramps and backache. It also balances hormones to improve PMS, mood swings, and hot flashes. Jasmine is a source of phytoestrogens. These substances are great for balancing hormones especially in menopausal women. 
It improves the quality of sleep
Jasmine essential oil is great for improving the quality of sleep you get daily. According to research led by Dr. Brian Raudenbush – Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Wheeling Jesuit University, dispensing jasmine odor into a room where participants were sleeping “led to greater sleep efficiency and reduced sleep movement.”
Jasmine oil is excellent for skin care as it is said to help dry and aging skin, reduce eczema and dermatitis, hydrate skin, reduce the appearance of scars, and help the skin to regenerate. This leads to clear skin which in turn improves confidence. 
Encourages feelings of happiness
This is most likely due to its effect on the nervous system. The fact that this oil alleviates anxiety and nervous tension, as well as reduces depression and stress, is enough reason to make a person happier.
Ways to use Jasmine essential oil
To get the best out of this magic product, it could be used in a number of the following ways
- in a diffuser
- by inhaling it directly from the bottle
- diluting it in a carrier oil and adding to your bath water
- using it as a massage oil
- adding it to a bowl of hot water to be used for facial steaming. 
Aside from jasmine, there are other house plants that are also great for soothing anxiety. Some of them include lavender, chrysanthemums, peace lilies, valerian, aloe vera, and English ivy.
