We have all experienced the pitfalls of sleep deprivation. Whether it’s a result of a brutal jet lag, stressful life circumstances, or a chronic condition, the discomfort is all the same. We toss and turn, pull the covers this way, scrunch the pillow that way, rolling to one side until one arm falls off the edge, the blankets so tangled you can figure out which side is which, and you find yourself the next morning in a mess of sheets in an extremely unnatural position. That’s only the beginning. The next day, you can’t concentrate, productivity is falling wayside, everything and everyone irritate you, and your health is plummeting.
Ditch the day coffee and beginning sleeping with this one minor change.
Improve Sleep With Weighted Blankets
The Science Uncovered
Deep Pressure Touch Simulation (DPTS) is a beneficial type of therapy with physical and psychological advantages that uses pressure over the body, similar to a massage.
“Deep touch pressure is the type of surface pressure that is exerted in most types of firm touching, holding, stroking, petting of animals, or swaddling,” says Temple Grandin, Ph.D. “Occupational therapists have observed that a very light touch alerts the nervous system, but deep pressure is relaxing and calming.”
Typically, weighted blankets are a part of occupational therapy for children with sensory disorders, anxiety, or autism-related issues.
“In psychiatric care, weighted blankets are one of our most powerful tools for helping people who are anxious, upset, and possibly on the verge of losing control,” says occupational therapist N.H.Karen Moore, OTR/L.
How the Blanket Works
While lying in bed, the weighted blanket molds to your shape in a warm hug. They are “weighted” with plastic poly pellets sewn into the compartments to keep the pressure evenly distributed. This is a safe and natural sleep therapy and is used in hospitals to calm the patients’ anxiety and promote better sleep. Think of a happy infant swaddled in her mother’s arms. The weight of this blanket gives similar comfort and relief to the nervous system.
When gentle pressure is administered to the body, it promotes serotonin production and lifts your mood. Then serotonin naturally transforms into melatonin, giving your body the cue to rest.
A study published in Occupational Therapy in Mental Health the proved that these weighted blankets are effective therapy for reducing anxiety and distress in patients. These findings were endorsed by a study in Australasian Psychiatry.
More Blanket Benefits
Since gentle pressure raises serotonin levels, this weighted blanket can treat ailments related to its deficiency, such as:
Restless Leg Syndrome
People suffering from these disorders have reported alleviation from their symptoms.
*Do not use if you are experiencing respiratory, circulatory, or temperature regulation issues, or are recuperating from surgery.
