The Queen of England Gives a Speech in a Green Dress and Sparked an Online Photoshopping Tournament

While this may be a bit disrespectful to Britain’s longest-ruling monarch, you can’t really blame people for having too much time on their hands these days. You can’t also blame anyone for laughing at some of these hilarious results (self-consolation, anyone?). Let’s hope she takes the memes in good humor.

Her Royal Majesty the Queen of the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II, addressed the British people on the recent coronavirus pandemic plaguing the whole world. The 93-year-old, who rarely addresses the public outlined the many unprecedented economic downgrades brought about by the crisis [1]. She went on to acknowledge the NHS and all front-liners putting their lives on the line to save others.

While speaking hope and light onto the people, she said, “Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it. I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge, and those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any, that the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet, good-humored resolve, and of fellow feeling still characterize this country. The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.”

Long live the Queen.

Well, not everyone was listening to the enlightening speech. Some people were getting ready for a tourney, a fierce battle on Twitter that has gone wildly viral and is still raging. Even people who have never explored Photoshop in their lives have discovered hidden talents with this one.

The Queen, in her usual modest style, wore a lovely turquoise green dress, described as the “perfect Photoshop bait,”  by a Twitter user named Peter Chiykowski. He proceeded to Photoshop an image of a stunned cat on an abstract background all over the “green screen”, and a new trend immediately broke out. Hundreds of people have joined in and are making light-hearted memes with the dress, covering the green color with everything from coronavirus warnings and a punisher t-shirt to a Bitcoin logo and heavy metal attire.

Wow.

It’s all for a bit of fun in these scary times

Speaking with Bored Panda, Peter Chiykowski, a content creator explained that he hadn’t intended for the meme to go viral, but as long as they made people happy, it was worth it [2]. He’s from Canada, a Common Wealth country, and he affirmed that he meant no disrespect to the monarch.

Most people are celebrating how fun and silly it is, but early on, one person said that I was being disrespectful.”

Ideas are meant to be shared,” Peter reiterated. “Memes are one of the best ways humans have ever found to share ideas with each other. If your joke or a nice sentiment can find someone anxious and make them calm, or find someone lonely and remind them that they’re not alone, then a meme is doing more good for the world than a painting in a fancy gallery.”

People rumored that the Queen’s bright green outfit was worn in solidarity to the marvelous work being done by the world’s front-liners, who often wear turquoise green scrubs for varying purposes. This may be true, but according to her daughter-in-law, Sophie Rhys-Jones, Countess of Wessex, the Queen wears bright colors to stand out and attract attention to herself, which makes a lot of sense. Wherever Her Majesty appears, there is always a crowd and, as Sophie said in the documentary, The Queen at 90, “Don’t forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, 10, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the queen’s hat as she went past.”

That’s true.

Well, here are some of the funny memes Twitter Photoshoppers came up with:
